Special Education
Lethbridge School District No. 51 prides itself in meeting the needs of all its students. To this end, we have developed programs aimed at assisting students with a variety of physical and/or mental handicapping conditions. Most of these programs are housed within the local school. We continue to provide educational programming to students who are hospitalized, institutionalized or temporarily housed in local crisis centres.
Identification and programming is the responsibility of each school. Each student identified has an Individual Program Plan (IPP) developed based on assessments, that details desired student outcomes and directs instruction, modification and accommodations. To ensure quality programs and student outcomes each school has at least one full-time special education teacher-except where low school enrollment warrants a half time teacher. Additional special education teacher time is assigned based on need.
