General Stewart School Principal Retires
Mel Fletcher, principal of General Stewart School, has announced that he will be retiring at the end of the 2009/10 school year. Mr. Fletcher joined Lethbridge School District in 1990 and has served as an administrator at Gilbert Paterson Middle School, Wilson Middle School and Allan Watson High School prior to the past five years as principal at General Stewart School.
Mr. Fletcher received all his schooling in Lethbridge beginning at Allan Watson Elementary, Hamilton Jr. High and LCI. He earned his B. Ed. at the University of Lethbridge and completed his M. Ed through the University of Montana at Missoula. He began his teaching career in a neighbouring District, where he worked as a teacher, assistant principal and principal. He was a noted basketball coach, leading his teams to three provincial championships. Outside of school, Mr. Fletcher has been involved in theatre, having appeared in productions like The Sound of Music and Annie.
Mr. Fletcher has been an amazing contributor to Lethbridge School District. He has a great sense of humour and has brought excellent ideas and energy to his schools and District meetings.
District Superintendent Barry Litun stated, “Mel retires knowing he will be remembered for his kindness and goodness towards students, staff, parents and community members. We wish him all the best in his retirement.”
Lethbridge School District has begun the process of identifying Mr. Fletcher’s successor, including meeting with parents and staff to develop a profile for the next principal of General Stewart School.
